But made hard work of run chase

This was a real game of two halves for the under 11's: the best bowling and fielding display of the season so far followed up by a rather inept batting display which almost saw us snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Bedminster won the toss and elected to field first, Portishead making a slow but assured start taking no chances, playing each ball on its merits. It was somewhat ironic then that the first wicket came by way of run out, a great bit of fielding by Oliver Sully hitting the stumps from mid-on. After being a little off with his radar in his first over it was impressive to see Brody Eastwood's determination to keep bowling his allotted four overs, the following three were impressive giving the batsman little to hit, and he got his reward by bowling the other opening batsman. First bowling change saw the pairing of George Martin and Joe Armitage who worked well in tandem, their combined bowling figures during this eight over period an impressive 4 wickets for 13 runs, at one point Joe the diminutive leg spinner was on a hat-trick. Portishead finished on 60-7, credit to the boys in the field taking the two catches and one run out opportunity and an impressive performance behind the stumps by David Taylor, no byes appearing in the extras column. With Ali Butt and Oliver Sully opening the batting Bedminster must have thought they were going to rattle off these runs in quick fashion and be home for an early bath. Both openers fell in the first few overs, Dan Sledge and Harry Bryan coming to the crease to steady the ship a little with a composed four over partnership. After the fall of Harry, Bedminster chasing a rather modest total, looked at times like they had been watching a little too much IPL, trying to hit boundaries off most of the deliveries and had Portishead been a little more composed in the field would have lost wickets through run outs. While always ahead of the run rate a steady procession of wickets was beginning to worry the coaches, the advice to "play yourself in, we're way ahead of the run rate" falling on deaf ears with some rather agricultural shots looking to smash the ball over cow corner resulting in a flurry of wickets. It was left to George and Brody to bring the boys home: exciting viewing for the supporters but a second half performance that will have left the coaches biting their finger nails.
