Duckworth and Drissel Cause Havock With the Swinging Cherry As Shean Dog Takes Abuse For Granny Bashing

It was a glorious afternoon for cricket as the Bedminster 2nd XI headed to Bishopston sitting pretty at the top of the table.
Skipper Tryfonos demanded that his side met up in good time. Once again Bedminster had arrived at the ground before their hosts, all that is bar the Skipper and the vice (who was unusually getting a run out this week). 45 minutes later the captain’s car arrived and he immediately began to fine the youth players using the classic attack is the best form of defence technique (one he often neglects to use whilst at the crease).
Following a good warm up the lads were ready. Tryfonos lost the toss and Bishopston decided to bat. Their skipper obviously didn’t fancy a long afternoon or had not been checking the Bedminster results as they had dismissed a number of sides recently for less than 100.
Duckworth and Drissell (“The Double D’s”) were handed the new ball. It was a slightly quiet first few overs for both bowlers and the heat seemed to be causing them a few issues with sweat pouring recently applied sun cream in to the pair’s eyes. The breakthrough came a few overs in as one of the openers snicked a delivery from Duckworth and part time keeper Rothero snapped up the edge.
The very next over Drissell produced a fantastic delivery knocking off peg out the ground and bowling the other opener. Bishopston starting to look a little nervy following a relatively steady start.
Both Drissell and Duckworth received regular threats from Tryfonos that they were being taken off only for the skip to change his mind half way through the following over and keeping them on. This turned out to be a good decision from the captain. Drissell kept one end tight and allowed Duckworth to bowl aggressively at the other end. With the ball starting to swing in over 8 thanks to specialist shiner Filer, Duckworth saw his first ball put down by VC Patel at second slip. However the cordon refocused and Rothero took another catch as Duckworth hit the outside edge. The next batsman was bowled first ball leaving Duckworth on a hat trick. This delivery flew off the outside edge sending both the elder statesman in the side (McCormack and Patel) diving towards each other in the cordon. As they hit together many in the side presumed the ball must have been dropped. However, never doubt McCormack, who has proved time and time this year he belongs at first slip. He jumped up with the ball and Duckworth had his hat trick (unbeknown to skipper Tryfonos who was more worried about keeping the shined up cherry of the floor).
Peacock replaced Drissell (6 – 1 – 24) and began very well. Often beating the outside edge, he was unlucky not to pick up an early wicket.
Duckworth (9 – 5 – 15) finished his 9 over spell with one final wicket having been threatened with a wicket or have a blow for 7 straight overs in 30 degree heat by Tryfonos (a ploy that seemed to work well for all). Hedges came on to accompany Peacock and both these bowlers continued to cause the batsman problems, Hedges with his pace and Peacock with great movement in the air , but perhaps both giving away a few too many extras.
Tryfonos soon decided it was time to bring himself on and from the figures you would say this was a good decision. Having witnessed the spell it certainly could have gone either way. Tryfonos’ stock delivery of the long hop seemed to keep confusing the batsman into chipping the ball to fielders. His variation of the low full toss also didn’t seem to get the treatment it deserved. There were however a few beauty’s in his spell, particularly the delivery that he turned off middle stump into the hands of McCormack, he then pressurised the young umpire to lift his finger as “there is no way I could spin it that far”. Tryfonos (8.1 – 3 – 31).
Jack Filer bowled with Tryfonos from the other end and his 2nd decent spell of the season proved to be very tidy and very unlucky not to pick up any wickets. Perhaps if he could target the stumps a little more when bowling that fantastic length he would cause the batsman even more of an issue.
One final point to note from the innings was a great piece of fielding from Peacock that resulted in a run out. Bishopston ending the innings for 144 all out from 39.1 overs. Bedminster perhaps not quite showing the killer instinct of previous weeks but a good performance none the less.
Following a solid tea it was time for Bedminster to bat. Tryfonos and Randhawa opened up with Bedminster pushing for full points. Both openers didn’t seem particularly pressured by the bowling attack and Bedminster got off to a solid start. Randhawa, who looked to be timing the ball fantastically, was bowled for 13 trying to hit the ball a little too hard.
This bought Shean the run machine to the crease. From the off he looked very strong, regularly finding the boundary. Tryfonos was the glue to Shean’s fireworks and the two quickly began to bully the bowling attack. After a few overs Shean decided 4’s were fun but 6’s were better, our apologies go out to the number of grannies who had to run for cover as Shean regularly hit the Bishopston leg spinner over the netting into the retirement home.
The chase never looked in doubt with Shean (86) and Tryfonos (38) at the crease and after just 20.3 overs they had reached the required total.
Another great win for Bedminster as we march towards another promotion. Congratulations to all involved.
