Newman knocked Clean Out..... (Probably Not For The Last Time This Year)

Alex ‘The Greek’ Tryfonos’ lucky Drachma came good again in this top of the table clash and after a damp week in BS3, he chose to insert the high flying Hampset opposition.

The ever dependable pair of James Duckworth and John House opened up, Duckworth taking the first over coming down the hill. He started like a man bang in form by bowling a huge legside wide first ball that keeper Lewis Shean did well to reach. He roared back with a vengeance the very next ball however, by bowling the dangerous Hill to give Bedminster the perfect start. The fact it was a shin high full toss that bowled Hill round his legs made the dismissal all the more comical. House, yet again asked to bowl up the hill, by comparison got through 4 overs, taking no wickets for just 16 runs. An economy of 4 an over does not tell the full story of a spell littered with wides, no balls and a disgusting beamer that nearly decapitated the batsman and Shean.

Skipper Greek then introduced teen prodigy Max Tryfonos, replacing House. The younger Tryfonos dished up a spell of absolute filth. He was not helped by his father asking him to bowl leg stump line to a 5-4 offside field however and Hampset batsmen Costello lapped up the fodder on offer by repeatedly sweeping Tryfonos into the acres of room on the legside. Tryfonos was subsequently removed from the attack with figures of 3-0-20-0.

Tryfonos’ day got worse as he preceded to drop the easiest catch the Bedminster faithful had ever seen off the bowling of the ever dependable, if incredibly arrogant, Lewis Mason who had replaced Duckworth. Mason bowled with good accuracy, mixing pace with slower balls in his first spell and returned to do the same job near the death of the Hampset innings finishing with 9 overs, 2 maidens none for 29. Some would say he was unlucky to end with no wickets, having numerous LBW appeals turned down by the Hampset umpire. Tryfonos’ drop cost no less than 70 runs as Costello would go on to make a horrendous 117 Not Out.

Harrison Newman replaced Tryfonos from the bottom end and after complaining of being tired, lived up to his own complaints and bowled 6 overs of slower balls. In his own words, it was ‘nipping around though’ and once such delivery beat the inside edge of opener Duguids bat to trap him dead in front for a turgid 14. The trusty Newman finished with figures of 6-0-27-1.

Newman and Mason were replaced in tandem by the spin twins of Mark ‘Bhaji Singh’ Barnes and Nazrul ‘I’m a batsman’ Kadir. Barnes showed how his talents had been utterly wasted in the first team by spinning a web of mystery that the Hampset batsmen got thoroughly snared in, taking 5 for 36 from his 9 overs. His first wicket owed itself to the energy of Duckworth. Seeing House stand statuesque under the high ball, he sprinted round from mid on to take a good running catch to dismiss run machine Williams for 12. Barnes’ other 4 wickets were taken with regulation half trackers that he claimed were a perfect length for a track just stopping a touch on the batsmen.

Barnes should have had 6. Newman, fielding at long on, looked comfortable under a ball gently chipped to him by Costello on 94 decided this was an appropriate time to forget to use his hands as the ball missed them completely and hit him square on the left cheek. Both batsmen seemed concerned for Newmans welfare but his teammates reassured them that there wasn’t much to damage. Indeed, Newman admitted that he wasn’t hurt and simply lay there in an attempt to make the incident look less ridiculous. He also admitted that he wasn’t too bothered about the drop as ‘looking comfortable under the catch’ was more important to him. From the other end, Kadir meanwhile only managed to spin a web of runs and wides finishing with figures of 5-0-33-0.

Newman, Duckworth (9-0-40-1) and Mason (9-2-29-2) combined at the end to fail in bowling Hampset out leaving their team short of bonus points, Hampset ending on 214 for 8.

Bedminster were able to start their innings before the rain came, Barnes and Max Tryfonos opening up. Barnes faced the first ball and, in an attempt to up the rate before the rain came had a big swing and a miss. It didn’t get a whole lot better. Tryfonos batted with pace of a drunken sloth, opening bowler Marquiss ending his turgid stay for 2 (off 17 balls). Barnes departed second, caught at slip by Costello (notice the guy that gets dropped twice on the way to a ton catches one he didn’t even see in his lap) for 17. Some say he saw the clouds looming over the Clanage and tactically guiding the ball to first slip in an attempt to stay dry. Number 4 McCormack didn’t last long, swinging like a rusty gate at a full one and having his off peg knocked back. It was left to elder statesmen Alex Tryfonos and Vikash Patel to marshall Bedminster through the rain. Tryfonos batted as slow as his son, Patel looked remarkably comfortable until his studs clogged up with mud, turning the wicket into an ice rink. And that was that, the rain came, Bedminster finishing on 61 for 3 off 14 to end a thoroughly pointless day.
