Brain five-for and a tryfic M. Tryfonos 96 sees Bemmi 2s claim yet another 1st XI scalp

]Match day 8 saw the promotion chasing 2s make the relatively short trip up the road to Pill to face mid table Lodway 1st XI. With overcast conditions, the slight threat of rain and a deck that resembled a rolled vegetable patch, winning the toss was imperative. After a weeks rest and some intense physio work, back in action Bedminster captain A. Tryfonos duly obliged and inserted the opposition.

With possibly the tallest opening bowling partnership in the B&D, J. House and J.Brain set about their business. A flurry of early boundaries from Lodway opener J. Rowsell and a dropped catch off the bowling Brain set an early negative tone. However, Brain struck in the 4th over clean bowling Rowsell for 18, one hack across the line too many.

Had the 2’s finally found the wicket taking opening bowler they been searching for all season. The answer was yes, with Brain continuing to strike regularly from one end, and the perpetually unlucky House toiling at the other end Lodway were reduced to 67-5. The vice captain V. Patel then made a rallying cry of “all out under three figures then lads!!” oh dear!

After losing a further wicket to a well taken caught and bowled by N. Kadir, Lodway began to rebuild. Lodway’s N. Coleske began finding the boundary regularly and picking up easy singles and twos with lack luster fielding from the wearying fielders as they were being moved between every delivery by captain Tryfonos. D. Gayford also provided an irritating cameo of 28 as further catching chances went down or were completely ignored. Gayford was finally dismissed with Kadir again catching off his own bowling.

Brain made C. Sharpe his fifth victim of the day, with the batsman cuffing a simple catch to T. Rothero at square leg, Brain finishing with figures of 5-35 on his return to the team after several weeks in exile.

Coleske carried his bat for a well constructed 71* as Lodway somehow managed to post 203 all out as M. Tryfonos had K. Parkhouse stumped off the last delivery of the innings. The VC was not fined for his earlier ‘under three figures’ outburst. R. John also finally had a ‘bowl’ after several weeks of whining from the boundary but the less said about that the better.

After a brief post tea pep talk from the captain Bedminster began the run chase with S. Roche and M. Tryfonos. With both batsmen looking solid after the first few overs the boundaries started to flow from Tryfonos on both sides of the wicket with the ever-dependable Roche picking gaps in the field for ones and twos. Not known for his free flowing stroke play Roche raced into double figures in the 10th over before plopping a full toss into covers’ hands in the 12th. Meanwhile Tryfonos looked to be in excellent touch on his return from a forgettable foray into the 1st team with runs coming freely. The loss of Roche brought C. McCormack to the crease who quickly lost his middle pole to J. Crutchley for a duck.

Tryfonos was then joined by R. John. Fired up by his disappointing bowling spell John set about the bowling, timing the ball sweetly. The pair struck up an excellent partnership finding the boundary regularly with Tryfonos bringing up his half century. John eventually fell for an aggressive 29, bowled by B. Stitfall. T. Rothero offered Tryfonos some support with a quick fire 13 before his trademark miss timed shot into the hands of midwicket.

Tryfonos eventually fell just short of his maiden century unselfishly hitting out for an excellent 96. This brought the teenage pair of K. Belcher and N. Kadir to the crease. Both batsmen made light of the pressure situation and coolly picked up the remaining runs with Kadir dispatching D. Gayford back over his head for four seeing the side home with four balls to spare and only six wickets down.

With Bedminster picking up the maximum 30 points and title rivals Hampset slipping up in a pointless loss to St. Mary Redcliffe, Bedminster move 13 points clear at the top of Div 3.
