Just like the hot air balloon flying over The Clanage, Bedminster finally lift themselves off the bottom of the table in WEPL Prem 1 with a 16 run win over Lechlade to record a hat-trick of wins.

Following last weeks unreported victory away to Frocester, Bedminster continue on their winning ways in WEPL Prem 1 hosting Lechlade as they entered the second half of their 2017.

In the previous encounter between the two sides Bedminster were comprehensively defeated by 8 wickets. However with confidence in their batting returning, Bedminster won the toss and chose to bat, on a hot and sunny day at The Clanage. Garreth Elphick (6) was emphatically dismissed at close range by a diving one handed catch from Benny Ellis. Tom Barnes (10-0-34-3) removed the rest of the top order Drissell (15) bowled, Tom Smith (32) caught by keeper Dial and Mark Alleyne (16) LBW, leaving Bedminster 95-4 in the 21st over.

Rob Cunliffe (10) also fell victim to the gloves of Dial from Freddie Martin (9-0-48-2). Sai Kamuni completed his hat-trick of half centuries but was caught by Higgins from Tom Young shortly after for an impressive 56 (off 60 balls). Richard Sillars (46) and Tom Pugsley's 65 run partnership took the home side to 231 and maximum batting points before Sillars was caught and bowled by Young (9-0-56-2). Liam Smith sent Mark Barnes (3) stump cartwheeling towards the suspension bridge. Pugsley enjoying the sunshine hitting 52 not out (36 balls) was joined by skipper James Carter (10 not out) who hit two fours to close the innings on a competitive 275-8.

Tom Young's (16) love of the short ball was showed as early as the second delivery of the Lechlade innings as he hit a maximum of Sillars to the short leg side boundary, but his innings was brought to an end when Sam Knapp trapped him LBW on the final ball of the fourth over with the score on 31. With Lechlade going at just under nine an over a change of tactics were required so captain Carter brought himself on and Bradley Dial (26) was caught on the mid on boundary by Kamuni with the Lechalade score now 89-2 inside eleven overs. Carter also had Joe Breet (10) caught by Alleyne on the first ball of the 17th over, but along with George Drissell had slowed the run rate down as Lechlade were 105-3.

A 79 run partnership between Higgins and Freddie Martin (26) was brought to an abrupt end as Carter reintroduced himself having an immediate impact bowling Martin with his first delivery of the 33rd over. Ryan Higgins brought up his near run a ball century, including 11 fours and 3 sixes but Carter (10-1-38-4) picked up his fourth and most important wicket as glove man Elphick finally took a catch, Lechlade were now 210-5 in the 41st over. Benny Ellis and Chris Harwood, the latter of whom had flown in from a holiday in Columbia, continued to offer the visitors hope of a victory.

Veteran Mark Alleyne had other ideas having Ellis (21) caught by Drissell, Harwood (22) LBW and bowling Tom Barnes for a first ball duck swinging the pendulum back Bedminsters way as Lechlade were now 243-8 on the final delivery of the 47th over. Teenager Harvey Jupp showed no fear as hit Gloucesters Tom Smith (9-0-49-0) for a four and six to keep up the chase. Alleyne (10-1-35) was denied a hat-trick ball by Liam Smith (5) who scampered a single, but then removed the bails to run Smith out as he took on the accurate arm of Sillars as he tried and failed to risk a second. With 19 needed for victory and Jupp on strike Bedminster took no chances and brought back paceman Sillars who conceded only a no-ball and a single leg bye off the last over to give the hosts the win.

The win means Bedminster find themselves replaced by Corsham at the botttom of WEPL Prem 1 and with only 23 points between them and third place leaves them in a positive frame of mind as they travel to Potterne next week. In between the WEPL fixtures Bedminster travel to Clevedon in the Bristol & District Cup to hopefully play the game that has frustratingly been rearranged several times.
